How to Order a Container Load of Granite from India: FCL Guide for UK Importers

India is the world's largest exporter of processed granite, offering countertop slabs, monument, headstones, flooring tiles and custom stone memorials to customers all over the United Kingdom, Europe and globally. On paper, it may seem appealing for high volume importers in the United Kingdom to place a direct order for a Full Container Load (FCL) from an Indian manufacturer.

However, the process isn't as straightforward as it seems to first-time importers. From factory selection, verifying quality, shipping, customs clearance, even dispute resolution, there's so much that can go wrong, and often does.

This guide walks you through exactly how FCL granite importing from India works, what it truly costs, where the risks are, and when it makes more sense to buy from a UK-based supplier like Stone Discover UK instead.

What is an FCL Shipment?

FCL stands for Full Container Load. Rather than sharing container space with other importers (LCL - Less than Container Load), you book and fill an entire container. For granite, the two standard sizes are:

  • 20-foot container: Holds roughly 18–22 metric tons of granite slabs or 80–120 finished headstone pieces depending on size
  • 40-foot container: Holds roughly 22–26 metric tons of slabs or 150–220+ finished headstone or monument pieces

FCL is the most prevalent purchase size for direct imports of granite from India. Nearly all Indian manufacturers will provide you the FOB (Free On Board) price per container with a minimum order quantity of one container of each item type.

Step-by-Step: How a Direct India Granite Import Works

Step 1: Source and Vet a manufacturer.

Granite processing is mainly located in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu in India. There are thousands of exporters. The challenge isn't just the number of suppliers to find, it's the number of suppliers who have quality, reliability and communication that will last from one order to the next.

Before placing an order, you need to consider the following:

  • Ensure that samples are requested and accessed prior to ordering
  • Check for export license and/or GST registration.
  • Request references from existing UK buyers – and call them!
  • Ensure the factory performs its own processing and not subcontracts it out.

Step 2 : Negotiate Price and Issue a Purchase Order

FOB prices are offered on a per container or a per square foot/metric ton basis, depending on the product. With granite monuments and headstones, the cost is usually based on the finished monument. It is per sq ft or slab bundle for natural stone slabs.

Common negotiation items involved are: unit price, payment terms (usually 30-50% deposit and the remaining balance to be paid before loading), packaging specifications, lead time, and dispute resolution terms. Ensure that all is confirmed in a written Purchase Order, it's unenforceable if it's verbal.

Step 3 : Production and Quality Inspection

Custom or Semi-Custom granite orders normally take 6-10 weeks until they are ready for the factory.  Standard stock items can be faster.

Do not skip pre-shipment inspection.

Options include:

  • Recruitment of third party inspection agencies like SGS/ Bureau Veritas or other local inspection agencies – $300- $600 per inspection visit in India
  • Sending your own representative;  practical only for large, ongoing volume
  • Doing over the factory QC; only acceptable with suppliers with a long and proven record of success.

Common quality issues caught at this stage: color inconsistency between batches, dimensional variance, surface pitting, poor polish depth, and cracking from improper crating.

Step 4 : Freight Booking and Shipping

Once goods pass inspection, the exporter loads the container and issues the Bill of Lading (BL).You or your freight forwarder will be responsible for making arrangements for:

  • Ocean freight: The primary ocean routes from India to the UK are from Chennai, Mundra or Nhava Sheva to Southampton, London or Liverpool. The transit time ranges from 25-30 days depending on route and transit.
  • Freight forwarder: If you are new to importing, then you will need an agent called a freight forwarder. They are responsible for booking, documentation and arranging with customs brokers.
  • Marine cargo insurance: If granite is heavy, it moves during transit and if it is damaged without insurance, what can you trust to happen to it?

Step 5 : UK Customs Clearance

Granite imports into the UK fall under commodity codes in Chapter 68 (Articles of stone):

  • 6802.93 – Granite, worked, for monuments/building; check current UK Global Tariff duty rate
  • 6802.99 – Other worked granite; duty rate varies

You will need a licensed UK Customs Broker to file the import entry. Budget for: customs duties under the UK Global Tariff, import VAT (20%), and any applicable port handling fees. Total customs and port costs typically add £1,200–£2,800 per container on top of freight.

Note: Import VAT is reclaimable for VAT-registered businesses.

Step 6 : Drayage and Final Delivery

After customs release at the port, the container needs drayage (trucking) to your warehouse. Southampton, London and Liverpool are both well-served with competitive drayage rates to most UK locations.

The Real Total Cost of an FCL Import

Many first-time importers only budget for FOB price + ocean freight and are surprised by what lands at their dock. Here is a realistic landed cost breakdown for a 20-foot container of finished granite headstones:

Cost Component Typical Range
FOB India (Product Cost) £8,000 – £24,000
Ocean Freight (India to UK) £1,800 – £3,200
Marine Insurance (0.5–1% of Value) £80 – £180
UK Customs Duties £300 – £600
Import VAT (20% – Reclaimable) Variable
Port Fees & Handling £350 – £600
Customs Broker Fee £250 – £450
Drayage to Warehouse (UK) £300 – £700
Total Estimated Landed Cost £11,080 – £29,730

Divide by your unit count and you have your true per-piece cost, the number to build your dealer pricing from.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many granite headstones fit in a 20-foot container?

Typically 80–120 finished upright headstone units (standard 24"×12"×4" uprights with bases), depending on packaging and exact dimensions. Slant markers and bevel markers pack more densely; often 140–180 pieces.

What is the minimum order for a direct India import?

Almost all Indian manufacturers require one full container per product type or color. Mixing multiple products in one container is possible but must be negotiated upfront and confirmed in the Purchase Order.

How do I handle a quality dispute with an Indian manufacturer?

Prevention is everything, third-party pre-shipment inspection is your main tool. Post-shipment disputes are very difficult to resolve due to jurisdiction gaps. Most experienced importers require inspection sign-off before the balance payment is released.

Can Stone Discover supply container quantities to large-volume buyers?

Yes. For monument dealers, cemetery suppliers, or funeral home groups buying at container-load volumes, Stone Discover offers volume pricing programs. Contact our trade team to discuss your requirements.
